Which style of Karate do we practice?

Image
Kan Zen Ryu was developed by the founder Shinan Farhad Varasteh to create a style with no limitations or weak points. The word KanZen is translated to mean ‘perfect method’. Unlike other styles, Kan Zen Ryu Karate goes into great detail, encompassing all the hand and sweeping techniques of the Koreans and Okinawans. Whilst unique in its teaching method, Kan Zen Ryu follows the traditional and universally accepted principles and philosophies of true karate. Kan Zen Ryu’s emphasis is on the practical aspects of karate, focusing on teaching a realistic approach to self-defence techniques. Kan Zen Ryu Karate is practiced by over 2 million people worldwide and can boast many State, National and World Champions. At Graveney Karate Kai, classes are taught by Mr Liam Wandi, an experienced martial artist with black belts in Karate, Judo and Gracie Jiu-jitsu. Classes will cover all aspects of self defence and traditional karate. These areas will include defence against grabs, pins and

The following Friday the number was down to a more manageable 23, many of whom had already bought their karate suits. I am very excited about the growth of our Karate Club.  We are members of Kempo Karate Association and, through them, the English Karate Federation. If you are new to us, please click through the links above to learn more about karate and our club. See you at training, Fridays after school at 3.25 - 4.25 OSU!

Osu (pronounced OSS!) is the one word that you'll hear the most in a Karate dojo or at a Karate tournament.  When you enter or leave the dojo, you bow and say "Osu".  When you greet a fellow Karateka  空手家 , you say "Osu" instead of "hello".  When you respond to an instruction or question in class, you say "Osu" instead of "yes" or "I understand".  When performing Kihon Waza  基本技  (basic techniques) in class, each technique is often accompanied with a loud "Osu".  When practicing Jiyu Kumite  自由組手  (free fighting) in class and your opponent lands a good, hard technique, you say "Osu" to acknowledge your opponent's skill. As a measure of respect, knockdown fighters at a tournament bow and say "Osu" to the front, to the referee and to each other, before and after the fight.  Osu is used in many situations and seems to mean a lot of things.  But what does it really mean? Osu  is a contract
